Back homesilly genealogies.
3/05/2008lets face it. genealogies are a part of the bible that we like to overlook. they’re never an exciting topic of study. but on occasion we find that they carry divine implications.
when we examine the root meanings of the names in genesis 5 (the genealogy of adam), we find something interesting…
adam translates: man
seth translates: appointed
enosh translates: mortal (also translated frail or miserable)
kenan translates: sorrow
mahalalel translates: the blessed god
jared translates: shall come down
enoch translates: teaching
methuselah translates: his death shall bring
lamech translates: despairing
noah translates: rest
“man (is) appointed mortal sorrow, (but) the blessed God shall come down teaching, (and) his death shall bring (the) despairing rest.”
i’d say that’s a rather classical old testament reference to christ. divine etymological implications are exhibited all throughout scripture. we just have to look for them!
exegesis.
27/03/2008parshas shemini: an interesting study on one facet of the jewish pardes; furthering the idea that critical interpretation of the bible (both new & old testament) reveals portions that are peshat (having a simple/surface meaning) or remez (having a deep meaning beyond the literal sense).
despite the theological divide between the jew and the christian, there is much to learn by the practicing jew’s devotion to extensive study of their doctrine.
